Sucker Punch Productions has officially announced that Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025.
The game transports players to 17th-century Japan, set in the snowy and mountainous region inspired by Hokkaido. Ghost of Yōtei promises a new chapter of stealth, swordplay, and vengeance with a fresh protagonist, Atsu — a skilled female warrior determined to bring justice to the Yōtei Six, a group responsible for the destruction of her village.
A New Heroine and a Darker Storyline
Atsu’s story picks up during the early Edo period in 1603, a time of political consolidation and unrest. Unlike Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima, Atsu is not a samurai by birth but a self-trained warrior who walks a morally ambiguous path shaped by personal loss. The narrative explores the cost of vengeance and questions of identity, tradition, and resilience in a world plagued by war and shifting loyalties.
Developers have emphasized Atsu’s unique combat style, which combines dual-bladed techniques, stealth takedowns, and environmental manipulation. The inclusion of decision-based dialogue and branching story arcs marks a significant evolution in narrative depth compared to its predecessor.
Expansive World, Enhanced Gameplay
Set against the backdrop of Mount Yōtei, the game world features a sprawling open map filled with snow-covered forests, icy ravines, remote shrines, and fortified enemy strongholds. Sucker Punch promises a seamless experience with no loading screens, made possible by the PlayStation 5’s powerful architecture.
New gameplay mechanics include:
- Vertical traversal using climbing axes and grappling hooks
- Weapon customization with craftable parts and elemental enhancements
- Dynamic weather systems that impact stealth and visibility
- Cinematic mode with fully voiced Japanese audio and historically inspired settings
Multiplayer co-op modes are also expected to return under the “Legends” banner, with new mission types and customizable characters.
Pre-Orders and Editions
Pre-orders for Ghost of Yōtei will open on June 10. The standard edition will retail at $69.99, while the deluxe edition ($89.99) will include a digital artbook, armor set, and early access to a side mission. A collector’s edition with a replica mask, map scroll, and steelbook case will also be available in limited quantities.
Legacy of Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima, released in 2020, became one of Sony’s most beloved exclusives, praised for its stunning visuals, tight combat, and emotionally resonant storytelling. With Ghost of Yōtei, Sucker Punch aims to build on that legacy while introducing new ideas and challenges for fans.
As anticipation builds ahead of the October release, Ghost of Yōtei is already being positioned as a strong contender for Game of the Year — and another landmark title in PlayStation’s acclaimed first-party lineup.
