The 14 Most Anticipated RPGs of 2025—Get Ready for Another Epic Year

With the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, RPGs have never felt more dominant on PC. The momentum shows no signs of slowing in 2025, with a stacked lineup of highly anticipated releases for those who love deep stories, character progression, and treasure hunting.

Keeping track of all these upcoming titles is no easy feat—even as someone who follows the industry closely, I was surprised by just how many exciting RPGs are on the horizon. To make things easier, I’ve compiled a list of the biggest and most promising ones set to launch this year.

Of course, delays are always a possibility. In the unpredictable world of game development, not every title will make its scheduled release date. But for now, let’s embrace optimism and take these announcements at face value.

With that said, let’s dive into the adventures that await in 2025!

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

  • Developer: Square Enix
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Release Date: January 23

PC players have had to exercise patience for this highly anticipated sequel, which debuted on PlayStation nearly a year prior. Thankfully, the wait has been softened by glowing reviews—the PS5 version received a 4.5/5 from GamesRadar and a stellar 90 from the now-defunct PLAY magazine.

It’s still a bit mind-boggling that a remake of a single game has expanded into a full trilogy, but for those who enjoyed Final Fantasy 7 Remake, another journey with Cloud and his crew is just around the corner. Expect even more refined gameplay, expanded story elements, and thrilling new content.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

  • Developer: Warhorse Studios
  • Publisher: Deep Silver
  • Release Date: February 4

Warhorse Studios is back with another deep, immersive historical RPG, once again setting itself apart with a gritty, realistic medieval world free from fantasy or sci-fi elements.

Early impressions suggest a larger, more confident sequel that doubles down on the tactile realism that made the original so unique. Last year, Fraser had a chance to go hands-on and found it promising—though he only scratched the surface of its open-world exploration and emergent gameplay. Expect a brutally authentic medieval experience.

Avowed

  • Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
  • Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
  • Release Date: February 18

When I previewed Avowed in November, I was pleasantly surprised. Initially, I feared it might be too old-school to stand out, but its classic RPG charm quickly won me over.

Set in the Pillars of Eternity universe but borrowing the first-person perspective of The Outer Worlds, Avowed blends familiar mechanics in an exciting way. It won’t be the next Skyrim—the scope is smaller—but for those craving a tightly designed fantasy adventure, it looks like an excellent early-year pick.

Monster Hunter Wilds

  • Developer: Capcom
  • Publisher: Capcom
  • Release Date: February 28

If someone had told me a decade ago that Monster Hunter would be one of the most anticipated PC games of 2025, I wouldn’t have doubted them—but I would have been surprised.

After Monster Hunter World introduced the franchise to a wider audience, Wilds aims to build on that success with even bigger maps, stunning visuals, and jaw-dropping creatures. Unlike Rise, which leaned into the series’ handheld roots, this installment seems poised to be the true successor to World, making it an exciting prospect for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Demonschool

  • Developer: Necrosoft Games
  • Publisher: Ysbryd Games
  • Release Date: Q1 2025

After multiple delays, this Persona-inspired RPG is finally expected to arrive in 2025. Blending turn-based combat with a striking mix of pixel art and PS1-style visuals, Demonschool is shaping up to be a unique and stylish experience.

With Into the Breach-like tactical battles and a story-driven structure, this could be a standout indie RPG—if it sticks the landing.

Menace

  • Developer: Overhype Studios
  • Publisher: Hooded Horse
  • Release Date: Q3 2025

From the creators of Battle Brothers comes a tactical RPG that takes the studio’s expertise in emergent storytelling and applies it to an XCOM-style alien invasion.

While Battle Brothers was well-regarded, its abstract art style wasn’t for everyone. Menace addresses that with a more cinematic look, making it one to watch for strategy RPG fans.

Borderlands 4

  • Developer: Gearbox
  • Publisher: 2K
  • Release Date: 2025

The latest installment in the Borderlands franchise is coming, but what’s truly new this time around? The trailer introduces fresh characters, enemies, and settings, but it’s unclear how much innovation is being brought to the table.

While I have a soft spot for Borderlands 2, the more recent entries have felt a bit formulaic. Hopefully, after six years, Gearbox has cooked up something fresh to rekindle the excitement.

The Outer Worlds 2

  • Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
  • Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
  • Release Date: 2025

Can Obsidian really launch two RPGs in one year? If all goes to plan, The Outer Worlds 2 will arrive before 2026, offering a sequel “twice as long” as the original with new planets, better gunplay, and expanded stealth mechanics.

With improved visuals and a satirical sci-fi universe to explore, this could be a major hit—assuming it doesn’t slip into 2026.

Solasta 2

  • Developer: Tactical Adventures
  • Publisher: Tactical Adventures
  • Release Date: 2025

The other RPG based on D&D 5e is getting a sequel, launching in Early Access this year. While the original nailed mechanics, its story and characters felt underdeveloped. If Solasta 2 can refine those elements, it might carve out a bigger niche, especially with Baldur’s Gate 3 in the rearview mirror.

Fable

  • Developer: Playground Games
  • Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
  • Release Date: 2025

It’s been 15 years since Fable 3. Bringing the franchise back won’t be easy, especially given its decline over the years. However, the new trailer suggests a promising blend of fresh visuals and classic British humor.

What remains unknown is how the gameplay will evolve. Without Peter Molyneux’s ambitious (and often exaggerated) ideas, the reboot will need to prove itself in a modern RPG landscape.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

  • Developer: The Chinese Room
  • Publisher: Paradox Interactive
  • Release Date: 2025

With a troubled development history and multiple delays, it’s hard to be optimistic about Bloodlines 2. While The Chinese Room excels at atmosphere, its experience with complex RPG mechanics is limited.

Still, if it turns out to be a buggy, messy cult classic, that would at least be in line with the original.

Elden Ring: Nightreign

  • Developer: FromSoftware
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco
  • Release Date: 2025

Rather than another vast open-world epic, Nightreign takes a different approach: a co-op roguelike. It’s a bold departure from Elden Ring’s methodical exploration, but at this point, any new FromSoftware content is a cause for excitement.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

  • Developer: Sandfall Interactive
  • Publisher: Kepler Interactive
  • Release Date: 2025

Inspired by Final Fantasy, this debut RPG from a small French team looks visually stunning. With turn-based combat and a unique premise involving a murderous goddess, it could be one of the year’s biggest surprises.

Moonlighter 2

  • Developer: Digital Sun
  • Publisher: 11 bit studios
  • Release Window: 2025

The core loop that made Moonlighter so engaging remains intact—balancing the life of a shopkeeper by day and an adventurer by night. While the sequel doesn’t seem to overhaul the formula, it introduces refined combat and a striking new 3D art style to enhance the experience.

One of the most exciting additions is the expanded town development system, allowing players to improve not just their own shop but also those of their fellow townsfolk. Paired with the game’s inviting aesthetic, it promises to be a rewarding and cozy adventure. Few things look as comforting as a blacksmith’s forge glowing in the moonlight.
