The Outer Worlds 2 Launches October 29

Obsidian Entertainment has officially confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 will launch on October 29, 2025, bringing back the offbeat sci-fi satire and deep role-playing mechanics that made the original a cult hit. Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, the long-awaited sequel was one of the event’s standout moments.

Expanded Worlds and Choice-Driven Narrative

Set in a new star system with an entirely different cast of characters, The Outer Worlds 2 promises to deepen the role-playing systems introduced in the first game. Obsidian says the sequel will feature more expansive planetary hubs, multiple quest resolutions, and dynamic dialogue trees that respond to a wider range of player choices.

The writing retains its irreverent tone, poking fun at corporate greed, space colonization, and RPG tropes. This time around, players will have more freedom to shape their reputation across multiple factions, influencing everything from story outcomes to companion loyalty.

Improved Combat and AI Systems

Combat is getting a major overhaul. The sequel introduces a more fluid mix of ranged and melee abilities, along with smarter enemy AI and a refined time-dilation system. Each companion also comes with unique battlefield roles and synergy options, offering more tactical depth.

Obsidian confirmed that weapon customization and skill progression have been expanded to allow for more diverse character builds, whether you want to roleplay as a smooth-talking diplomat or a reckless brawler.

Built for Xbox Series X|S and PC

The Outer Worlds 2 is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, which has allowed Obsidian to significantly upgrade visual fidelity and world detail. It will launch day one on Xbox Game Pass, and will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. There are no current plans for a PlayStation release.

The studio has also confirmed support for ray tracing, ultra-wide displays on PC, and a performance mode targeting 60 FPS on consoles.

A Confident Step Forward

While the first Outer Worlds was a surprise success, its scope was limited by budget and legacy tech. With The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian appears to be going all-in on player freedom, reactive storytelling, and expanded RPG systems.

More gameplay and hands-on impressions are expected later this summer as part of Xbox’s extended preview campaign. For now, fans of narrative-rich sci-fi RPGs have plenty to look forward to this fall.
